Becoming a Lawyer

To the youth of the Philippines and to the parents who guide them, I want to talk to you about something that could change your life and make a real impact on our community—becoming a lawyer.

I’m not just speaking as a lawyer who’s had the privilege of practicing for many years. I’m speaking as someone who’s seen firsthand how important it is to have people in the legal profession who are deeply committed to serving our kababayan. Our people attorneys who care, who want to help others, and who are driven to make a difference.

If you’re considering what path to take in life, I want to tell you why law might just be one of the most meaningful and fulfilling careers you can choose, not just for yourself but for your community.

Why We Need More Filipino Lawyers

We all know that the Philippines is a country of contrasts. On one hand, we have so much potential—the beauty of our culture, our resilience, and the strength of our people. But on the other hand, many of us are still struggling. Our systems are flawed, and a lot of people face barriers in getting the help they need. Whether it’s workers who aren’t paid properly, families fighting for land they’ve worked for generations, or the poor who don’t have the means to stand up for their rights—the law can be the difference between justice and injustice.

This is where lawyers come in.

Being a lawyer is more than just reading law books and going to court. It’s about being a protector of rights, a fighter for justice, and a voice for people who don’t have one. If you’ve ever thought about becoming a lawyer, let me tell you this:

You have the power to make a real difference in someone’s life. You could be the person who stands up for the worker who hasn’t been paid for months. You could be the person who helps a family fight against illegal land grabs. You could be the one who helps a woman escape from an abusive relationship and get the justice she deserves.

The impact of your work will reach beyond the courtroom. It can change the lives of individuals, families, and entire communities.

What Being a Lawyer Can Offer You

Being a lawyer isn’t an easy job, but it’s one of the most rewarding. It requires hard work, dedication, and a genuine desire to help others. But if you’re up for the challenge, the rewards are immense.

  1. Be a Voice for Those Who Can’t Speak Up:

A lot of Filipinos suffer in silence because they don’t know their rights or can’t afford a lawyer to help them. As a lawyer, you can change that. You can be that person who steps in and defends people who need it the most—whether they’re workers, farmers, students, or families who are being taken advantage of. Your work can empower the powerless and give hope to those who feel like they have no options. Trust me, the sense of fulfillment that I get from this is amazing and priceless.

  2. You’ll Never Stop Learning:

Law is a field that keeps evolving. Every case you take on is different, and every new challenge helps you grow. You’ll get the chance to learn about many different areas of life—business, politics, human rights, and social issues. Being a lawyer means constantly learning and adapting, which is exciting for someone who loves to grow and develop new skills. It keeps things exciting and very intellectually stimulating.

  3. Be Part of Something Bigger Than Yourself:

As a lawyer, you won’t just be representing a person or a business—you’ll be representing a cause. Whether you’re working for the rights of women, defending the environment, or helping marginalized communities, your work will have a direct impact on the kind of world we live in. That’s a pretty powerful feeling.

  4. A Career With Options:

The legal profession is diverse. You don’t have to follow the traditional path of a corporate lawyer or a criminal defense attorney. There are plenty of areas where you can make a difference. Environmental law, human rights law, immigration law, intellectual property law—there’s a huge range of areas where you can build a career that aligns with your passion.

To Parents: How You Can Support Your Child’s Dream

If your child has shown an interest in law, I encourage you to support them in every way you can. The road to becoming a lawyer isn’t always easy, and there will be times when it feels like too much. But as a parent, your belief in their abilities can make a huge difference.

Here are a few ways you can help them along the way:

  • Encourage their Curiosity:

A good lawyer is always asking questions. Help your child develop a habit of being curious about the world around them. Whether it’s reading books, listening to the news, or talking about the issues that matter, the more they learn, the more prepared they’ll be to make a difference.

  • Teach Them About Service:

Remind your child that being a lawyer isn’t just about the career or the status. It’s about service. Lawyers are in a unique position to help those who have no other way of protecting their rights. Teaching your child the value of serving others will help them stay grounded in the real purpose of their work.

  • Help Them Stay Resilient:

Law school can be tough, and the legal profession is no walk in the park. It’s a lot of hard work, long hours, and sometimes tough situations. Let your child know that setbacks are part of the journey. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about staying committed and never giving up.

To the young Filipinos reading this, I want you to know that the world needs more lawyers like you. The legal industry needs lawyers who care, who aren’t afraid to stand up for what’s right, and who are determined to make a difference in the lives of others. Be bold and unapologetic.

If you decide to pursue this path, know that it won’t be easy. But remember that the greatest challenges lead to the greatest rewards. By becoming a lawyer, you’ll not only change your own life—you’ll help change the lives of others, too.

So, take that first step. Choose to serve your community. Choose to fight for justice. Your future as a lawyer is waiting, and our Filipino people need you.
